Is Valentines Day Overrated?
I find it perplexing how a day that’s supposed to be all about love can also be one of the most despised days of the year. I’ve never celebrated a valentines day for its intended purpose, but that’s never prevented me from enjoying the day nonetheless. Don’t get me wrong it would be nice to spend the day with my significant other, and I look forward to the times where that is what I do, but in the meantime I’ll enjoy the day with my friends and family.
This year was one of my favourite valentines to date! I think this was because it was the first valentine’s day where I didn’t wish I had something I didn’t have (a boyfriend). I was too busy and received so much love from others that I never felt like I needed anything more.
My roommates and I started the day off by doing a sunrise polar plunge. Despite having my toes tingling from the cold it was a great morning. Changing up my typical school day morning routine really helped making the day special from the get go.
When we got back from the plunge we showered up, made breakfast, and then got ready for the day together. The dress code was pink…obviously. Lots of blush was applied, and of course charlotte tilbury pillowtalk liner was a must have on the lips. To finish off the valentines look I put on my Kate Spade rose gold heart earrings, and look was complete.
Of course on such a special day I had to make a stop at Starbucks for my morning coffee, and man was I in for a delightful surprise. Their menu “all you need is love and latte” fulfilled all my valentines coffee dreams. I decided on the Chocolate Covered Strawberry, which essentially was a cold brew with 2 pumps of white mocha, mocha drizzle and strawberry cold foam. This deliciousness met the dress code too! It was hands down the cutest and tastiest drink I’ve ever gotten from Starbucks.
I love receiving flowers. They’re so special to me, and I think they’re just so beautiful. My father bought me a stunning bouquet of pink roses. I don’t know what it is, but something about getting a valentines gift (especially flowers for me) from a parent is one of the most special things, arguably better than getting something from a romantic love.
On our way to class my friend and I saw a booth selling roses, so we each bought one for one another. Who would’ve thought that a wilted dead rose could bring so much joy into the lives of two stressed out students. That moment will forever hold a special place in my heart, and the impromptu photoshoot afterwards makes the moment live on forever.
Woven into these special moments was a normal busy day for me. I attended class, had practice, and I finished the night off with a shift at work. Valentines day really is just a normal day despite being a specially marked day on the calendar, but whether you believe it to be a made up holiday of love or not I think its a fun one to celebrate with those you love.
